Students will know how to read a play, what inflection is and how to use it, as well as how to apply it to the material at hand.
Students will be able to use their aquired knowledge when reading "The Crucible" in order to annotate the text, use inflection, and apply it to their everyday life as well as complete the given worksheet.

Maine Learning Results Alignment

Maine Learning Result: English Language Arts- A. Reading
A1 interconnnected Elements: comprehension, Vocabulary, Alphabetics, Fluency
Grades 9-Diploma
Students read text, within a grade span of text complexity, and aply their knowledge and strategies of comprehension, vocabulary, alphabetics, and fluency.

d. Read fluently and accurately with appropriate pacing and expression.
This lesson supports the Maine Learning results because the students will be using their knowledge of how to read plays as well as inflection in order to read "The Crucible" with appropriate pacing and expression. They will also be able to apply their knowledge to understanding the vocabulary and how to read fluently as well as relate the text and material to real life situations.

Assessment

Formative (Assessment for Learning)
Students will be evaluated on their participation in the activites at hand such as class discussions, class readings, and group work. Students will also be graded on the completion of their worksheets and annotations made during class.
Summative (Assessment of Learning)
Students wll use this information to better understand inflection and how the application of it can affect the meaning of the text. Their goal is to be able to read a piece of text using inflection as well as complete a worksheet defining infelction in addition to responding to several questions on inflection and how it relates to their everyday lives. The students will hand in this worksheet along with any addition notes made during the class time showing their annotation skills.

Integration

Technology- Students will be able to hear an audio clip of the passage read to them, originally performed by Dane Cook.
Students can use their skills in History when reading "The Crucible" in order to understand the historical context behind the book. Students can also use their Theatric skills when reading out loud to the class. The students can also use their logic and order skills from Science and Math to, in an organized mannor, deduct different conclusions on the meanings behind each act.

Groupings

When the students arrive to class they desks will be organized as usual, in an oval shape facing the black board. After readings, questioning the students, and an explination on inflection the students will be asked to work in pairs. The students will move their desks to their partners in pairs of two or three (I will let the students pick their own partners). After group work, reading to each other I will ask the students to place their desks in a circle, allowing the students to see all of their classmates at once. The classroom will remain in a circle for the rest of the period.

Differentiated Instruction

Strategies
Verbal - Students will be able to write down all notes in their notebooks as well as record them on the handouts while listening to me as well as their fellow students read. Students will also be able to listen to a audio clip by Dance Cook.
Visual - The worksheets will enable spatial learners to organize their ideas and thoughts.
Interpersonal - The students will work in pairs during the reading portion of class, reading to one and other using inflection. Then the students will be able to work as one large group reading the text all together, listening and learning as a class.
Intrapersonal- Students will be able to, at the end of class, reflect on their work while completing the worksheet and reflect on what they have learned during class.
Kinesthetic- Students will be able to get up and move desks and chairs around the room several times to create new seating arrangements to get them moving.
Logical - Students will be able to organize all of their thoughts in a structured way onto their worksheets.
Musical- Students will be able to listen to an audio clip of Dane Cook.
Naturalist- Students will be able to relate the experiences of the characters within the text to their lives and their surrounding environment.
Modifications/Accommodations
I will review student’s IEP, 504 or ELLIDEP and make appropriate modifications and accommodations. Students will be informed of the lessons in this unit and of the surrounding material. If any student feels incapable or uncomfortable completing an assignment or activity other options will be provided.
Absent students are required to still complete the work that is due. The missing work may be turned in but no later then the next class period. Students who are absent must meet with me if they wish to complete the missing work and/or obtain notes and other information from that class period.
Extensions
Students will be able to use technology to further their understanding of inflection. Through pieces of audio and video the students can see and hear how inflection is used in their everyday lives. After this lesson students can go and research these topics, expanding their knowledge of the subject matter.
